Arctic Council

Topic: Mitigating the Environmental Impacts of Mining

Welcome to the Arctic Council! We deal with chilling issues affecting the Northernmost regions on Earth. The Arctic Council was founded in Ottawa on September 19, 1996, as a high-level intergovernmental conference to promote collaboration, coordination, and contact among the Arctic States while actively including Indigenous Peoples and other Arctic residents in matters of pressing issues in the Arctic Circle. During WAIMUN 2023, the Arctic Council will be tasked with combating the detrimental effects of mining on the environment. Mining serves as an important tool to the local Arctic economies due to the vast amount of minerals and other valuable resources but also places immense stress on the Indigenous peoples, wildlife, and the overall environment. Delegates will need to collaborate to implement solutions that lessen the damaging impacts mining imposes on the Arctic and its residents.

  • Anisha Madivala

    DIRECTOR

Anisha is a junior at Jackson High School in Mill Creek and she is beyond ecstatic to be serving as the Director of the Arctic Council! Her journey in MUN all started when she and her friend scrambled to sign up for a spot at EDUMUN 2022 very last minute, but she is very glad she did because she soon grew passionate about representing Sweden and writing a position paper about journalists in militarized zones. Then came SeattleMUN. Then KINGMUN. And now, many more to come! The suspense and enthusiasm present in the debate is what kept her going till today. Whether it be meeting new people from all across Washington or even debating a bit more at each conference, she is one step closer to maximizing her MUN potential! Besides being a dedicated MUNNY, she can be found indulging in young adult books, listening to music from countless genres, or trying to increase her proficiency at guessing all the countries in the world. She cannot wait to meet all the talented delegates who sign up for AC in December and knows that this year’s iteration of WAIMUN will be MUN-forgettable!

  • Noor Nagi

    ASSISTANT-DIRECTOR

Noor Nagi is a junior at Tesla STEM High School and is delighted to serve as the AD of the Arctic Council at WAIMUN 2023! After joining her school’s MUN club in the 9th grade, Noor plummeted head-first down the MUN rabbit hole- enthralled by the intricacies of resolution writing and debate. Now as Tesla STEM MUN’s current vice president, she holds her breath and eagerly awaits future conferences. When she isn’t burrowed in her room reading various fantasy novels, Noor loves to paint portraits using mixed media (preferably oil pastels). In addition, despite her “gift” of clumsiness, Noor is an avid ski instructor anticipating her third season of teaching group lessons. Noor looks forward to staffing this year’s iteration of WAIMUN and can’t wait to see every delegate’s smiling face.
